The Vila Franca do Campo Islet is a protected offshore volcanic nature reserve. It is around 1 kilometre from the coast. The formation also contains a saltwater inlet.
Spend time around the waterfront before continuing east towards Furnas. This places the town naturally within a longer south-coast itinerary. You can also visit Vila Franca without continuing to Furnas. Its moderate distance makes it useful for a relaxed half-day coastal drive.
